The
Neroberg is Wiesbaden´s local mountain attraction. At 245 metres
above sea level it isn´t going to make you dizzy - unless it´s
with delight - because it provides you with the most magnificent view
ever of Wiesbaden. First of all you have to there. And it´s easy to
reach on foot or, even better, on the Neroberg Mountain Railway. Experience
this living part of Wiesbaden´s history for yourself. Have a good
trip and enjoy the views.
COMPINE HISTORY WITH PLEASURE.
YOUR 4-MILE-AN-HOUR TICKET

A trip on the Neroberg Mountain Railway will make you forget today´s
hectic pace. It is like a journey into the past. The carriages, preserved
to the very last detail and bearing the town´s cheerful blue and
yellow livery, have rumbled up and down Wiesbaden´s local mountain
ever since the railway was opened in 1888. The Neroberg Mountain Railway
season always starts on Good Friday and lasts until the end of October
- a pleasure for young and old alike.
A ROMANTIC RIDE UPHILL AND DOWNHILL
USING ONLY THE POWER OF WATER

Although environmental protection was not yet a public issue in 1888,
the health resort of Wiesbaden was concerned about it even then, choosing
a silent, completely pollution-free power source for the Neroberg Mountain
Railway, namely water ballast: at the top of the mountain, the downhill
carriage is filled with up to 7,000 ltrs of water and pulls the second
carriage uphill by means of a 452 m long steel cable during its downward
descent. When the downhill carriage arrives at the bottom, the water is
let off and pumped uphill once again. The speed is regulated by the downhill
driver. The railway is secured by pinions under the carriage that latch
into a toothed rack fastened to the rails. Its ingenious power source
is one of the reasons for the undiminished attractiveness of the Neroberg
Mountain Railway right to this very day.
WELCOME TO WIESBADEN
WELCOME TO OUR LOCAL MOUNTAIN
Start by simply enjoying the famous view. The whole of Wiesbaden is spread
out at your feet, together with the River Rhine, on the far bank of which
you can make out the silhouette of Mainz. On clear days you can even see
as far as the northern Odenwald . Also very worthwhile is a visit to the
"Russian Chapel " with its five gold-plated cupolas just a few
metres below the observation temple of Wiesbaden´s local mountain.
Summer visitors can relax in the Opel swimming pool, named after its donator
Wilhelm von Opel, and enjoy the view of Wiesbaden´s vineyards. The
Neroberg attracts a great deal of attention as a festival and show ground.
Every year, on the last Sunday in May, there is the "Nerobergfest"
- an event organised by the ESWE offering a broad spectrum of sports
and music. And you can enjoy a cappuccino under a sunshade at the Nerobergturm
Café or dine à la carte at the restaurant of the Opel swimming
pool.
